The Lindy Hop, Balboa, Blues, and Jazz Dance Camp and New Year's Party - Dec 26, 2019 to Jan 1, 2020
Ryan Swift - Head DJ (New York, NY)
Ryan has been swing dancing since 1998 and started DJing for dancers shortly thereafter. He is the co-organizer, music coordinator and house DJ for Frim Fram Jam, the longest-running weekly swing dance in NYC.
He has had the privilege of DJing for numerous Lindy Hop exchanges, dance camps, weekend workshops, and competitions, including national events such as the International Lindy Hop Championships, Stompology, Ultimate Lindy Hop Showdown & Frankie100, and at NYC events like Lincoln Center's Midsummer Night Swing. He has also served as head DJ at events like LindyFest & Lindy Focus.
Ryan was a founding member of Rochester's Groove Juice Swing, is an accomplished photographer, and is the creator and host of the popular swing dance podcast The Track.
Shana Worel (Altadena, CA)
Shana’s passion for music predated her love of swing dance. Growing up, classical piano, marching band and jazz band occupied her time, giving her a musician’s perspective on creating and interpreting music. This directly affects the music that she plays as a DJ and the way that it influences her dancing.
She is a sought-after DJ, and has been featured at All Balboa Weekend, Lindy Focus, California Balboa Classic, Lindy on the Rocks, The Balboa Experiment, Rocky Mountain Balboa Blowout and many other events. She loves talking about music and helping new DJs learn, so ask her a question. Or ten. Or fifteen if they’re about Lionel Hampton.
She’s also a rocket scientist by day. But she’d rather talk about Lionel Hampton.
Meghan Gilmore (Montreal, QC, CAN)
Meghan is a Canadian lindy hopper with a great passion for the music that makes us all want to swing out, just the way they did back at the Savoy. She loves the sounds of the big bands and musicians of the swing era like our friends Count Basie, Earl Hines and Erskine Hawkins among many others. Her favourite Lionel Hampton song is Till Tom Special. You may have danced to her sets at recent events such as Herräng Dance Camp, ILHC, and of course at Lindy Focus 2017!
Sam Carroll (Sydney, Australia)
Sam loves jazz. What type of jazz? Basie said it best: “Four solid beats to the bar and no cheating!”
Sam DJs for lindy hoppers, and her usual goal is: manic crazed adrenaline junky party. The best men for that job are Count Basie and Lionel Hampton, and of course, in front of every good man is a good woman: Mary Lou Williams, Ella Fitzgerald, or Billie Holiday. Yes, Sam likes a big serve of meat and potatoes. Nothing complicated here.
Sam’s been DJing since 2004, and got into lindy hop in 1998 because she loved jazz. International DJ Sam Carroll has most recently been a staff DJ at Herrang Dance Camp (2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018), Snowball in Sweden (2016), Authentic Jazz Festival in Seoul (2015), Seoul Lindyfest (2016, 2017), the Melbourne Lindy Exchange (2005-2016), and the Melbourne Swing Festival. She’s been head DJ for a bunch of events (including MLX, MSF, SSF, and SLX), and she runs lindy hop events in Sydney as part of her business Swing Dance Sydney.
All because she loves jazz.
Andi Hansen (Grand Rapids, MI)
Andi lives and dances in Grand Rapids, DJing there and wherever else she can get her hands on an aux cord. Her musical comfort foods are delta and Chicago blues, and she loves sharing those and other styles with the dance floor. Whether she's starting the party or playing some nice chill music, her mission is to help you enjoy yourself, and maybe even find some new favorite songs.
Kenneth Shipp (St. Louis, MO)
Kenneth has been spinning tunes for well over a decade, creating breakdance mixes from his dad's vinyl collection to DJing hip hop / break competitions in college. After falling in love with blues in 2014, he’s spent the past few years learning and diving into the wide variety of blues styles and history. Kenneth aims to get you grooving and moving every time you step out onto the dance floor. He loves playing with your faves while also showcasing the soul/blues legends from his hometown of Nashville and his new home of St. Louis.
Superheidi R'dam (Rotterdam, Netherlands)
Let’s keep it short & sweet: I’m here for all your swingin’ pleasure, to make you sweat, put that happy grin on your face and not allowing your feet a rest. If you heard my tunes at my stompin ground in the Netherlands or elsewhere (like Snowball, Lindy Shock, Herräng, All Balboa Weekend, Balboa Castle Camp) you know I’m having all the fun in DJing for any kind of swing dancer. My music tastes are pretty broad (try me!), but tell you what, the 1930s were really exciting!
